A 5-Minute, Secure Solution to Completely Preventing Computer Data Loss
7:17PM
Mozy is a service after my own heart. It’s an online backup system that’ll allow you to backup your computer files to a secure, remote location for easy restoration after a hard drive wipe, unexpected crash, virus attack, or system "ailment". They company offers a free option, MozyHome , that allows you to backup up to 2GB of data. But for anything over 2 gigs, the cost starts at just $4.95 per month.
You can set the backup to initiate on its own in the background while you’re doing other tasks, and can optimize it to either (1) free more of your computer’s resources so you can work on other intensive tasks without performance lag, or (2) set it to consume more resources but create the backup faster. I was super-surprised that I could still have Dreamweaver and my graphic editor open and doing their respective do’s without any loss in speed or functionality at my chosen setting.
All you need for this to work is to remain connected to the Internet (so the app can route your data to its secure storage location). But if you accidentally disconnect, no worries — just click to "restart" the backup when your Internet connection resumes, and MozyHome will pick up where it left off.
Nifty-nice.
It does take a huge-long amount of time to create the very first backup as it does whatever techie stuff it has to do to prep and store your data. But after that, the backups are incremental, meaning that it will only backup the changed or new files in the directories you’ve set. Since I’m constantly writing articles and designing … umm … "designs" … I’ve set mine to run a backup every two days. Quickly create an account with Mozy, download the software, and get to backin’ up.
I was backing up files in less than 5 minutes.
This is SO completely AWESOME — a highly necessary tool for e-business owners. For as little as $5 per month (or free , shoot), you can’t beat that with a stick!
